HUGH THE MANATEE One of Mote Marine Laboratory’s popular manatees, Hugh, died on April 29th. Born at the Miami Seaquarium, he had lived at Mote Marine since 1996 with his brother, Buffet. Hugh was famous for correctly picking the Kansas City Chiefs as last year’s Super Bowl winner. The manatee brothers also participated in voluntary, detailed behavioral research designed to aid manatee conservation. He was 38, which is relatively young for a manatee living in captivity.
RED SNAPPER SEASON The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has announced the 2023 red snapper season. The summer season opens June 16th and will run through July 31st. The fall season will be on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in October and November.
TURTLE NESTING SEASON Floridians are reminded that turtle nesting season started May 1st. Beach visitors are reminded to turn off lights, cover up holes, and remove items from the beach each day through October 31st so that the turtles may build their nests without harassment.
