Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind Reappointed is Dr. Thomas Zavelson, a retired pediatrician and clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Florida.

Central Florida Regional Planning Council Reappointed are Hazel Sellers, Bartow, Polk County School Board Member; and Donna Howerton, Sebring, vice president of South Ridge Abstract.

Civil Rights Hall of Fame Inductees Chosen from a list of ten nominees selected by the Florida Commission on Human Relations:

  • Jesse McCrary, Jr. (1937-2007), Miami. A graduate of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, he was the first African American to serve as Secretary of State in the Florida Cabinet since Reconstruction as well as the first African American assistant attorney general;
  • Earl M. Johnson (1928-1988), Jacksonville. He was the first African American to become a member of the Jacksonville Bar Association and represented many civil rights activists including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ambassador Andrew Young;
  • Rutledge Henry Pearson (1929-1967), Jacksonville. An American history teacher, civil rights leader, and human rights activist, he served as president of the Jacksonville Branch of the NAACP and was later elected President of the Florida State Conference of the NAACP.
