DIVISION OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT Floridians across the state were jolted awake by an emergency alert on their phones at 4:45am on Thursday, April 20th. The state was testing a new alert system, but the alert was supposed to air on television, not cell phones. The Division of Emergency Management issued an apology and announced that it ended its contract with Everbridge, the company hired to run the alerts. Officials urged people not to cancel future alerts on their phones as they provide important information in the event of weather or other dangerous incidents.
