WOODEN SHIP Hurricanes Ian and Nicole uncovered a wood ship from the 1800’s near Daytona Beach. Storm erosion revealed a 100-foot-long wood and iron object over the Thanksgiving weekend. There are no plans to remove it from the sand as it would cost millions of dollars.

STATE CAPITOL DEMONSTRATIONS The Florida Department of Management Services is proposing new freedom of speech rules at the State Capitol. The rules would allow law enforcement to remove individuals they think may prove disruptive. The ACLU argues that the rules are so poorly written no single person could determine what is permissible and where. The State argues that constitutional rights would not be infringed because the Capitol grounds are limited public forums where restrictions on speech is permitted.

HOUSING SHORTAGE The Florida Apartment Association launched a new website which provides residents and policymakers reliable information on rental housing needs in their communities. Information includes statewide, county and metro area statistics. Among the findings are:

  • Between 2020 and the first quarter of 2022, construction costs increased more than 40 percent;
  • Florida’s population is expected to grow 3.2 million by 2030, with Sumter and Osceola counties each increasing by more than 40 percent;
  • On average, renters account for one in three Florida households. Miami-Dade and Leon Counties have the highest rental properties at 48.4 percent and 47.4 percent, respectively; and
  • Florida’s multifamily housing construction lagged over the last decade. Between 2010 and 2019, Florida only built 950,000 new units, compared with 1.62 million units in the 2000’s.
