Below is a selection of bills signed by the Governor as of today

DEATH PENALTY This key issue was resolved early in the session with the Legislature passing a bill that requires unanimous jury recommendations before defendants can be sentenced to death.  Clarification about Florida’s death penalty law had been needed since January 2016 because of rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court and the Florida Supreme Court. The Governor approved this on March 13th.

LAKE OKEECHOBEE  CS/SB 10 funds a reservoir south of Lake Okeechobee and provides a construction loan for the C-51 reservoir. This was a top priority of Senate President Negron. The Governor signed the bill at John Stretch Park in Palm Beach County on May 12th.

DRIVER’S LICENSES This bill makes permanent the pilot program “Keys to Independence” which helps teenage foster children obtain a learner’s permit or driver’s license, locate driver education courses and obtain car insurance.

RIDE-SHARING After failing to pass meaningful legislation last year, both chambers approved a bill that sets up a statewide regulatory framework for ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft that includes requirements for insurance coverage and driver background checks.

NOTARY PUBLIC A veteran health identification card is now on the list of acceptable forms of ID that a notary public may use to notarize document signatures.

GUARDIANSHIP This bill revises procedures relating to incapacity hearings and the circumstances under which the court may approve divorce for persons under the protection of a guardianship. It also removes the $6,000 cap on the amount a guardian may spend on a ward’s funeral.

BODY CAMERAS Under this bill, law enforcement agencies throughout the state would be required to establish procedures so that officers would have the opportunity to review body camera footage prior to writing a report or providing a statement.
